CASE STUDY – MACHINING AND GRINDING

 

CHALLENGES


 

A French manufacturer of cylinder liners for heavy duty engines such as Caterpillar, Volvo and DAF was actively looking to:

  • Improved machining performance
  • Increase cleaning power
  • Alleviate fungal issues and reduce machining fluid waste

The system environment was a challenge to maintain sump life for up to 1 year, generating a large amount of industrial waste from coolants.

In addition, since the scrap cast iron chips are typically recycled into the oven fluid carry-over should be minimized.

 

THE SOLUTION


 

Quaker introduced QUAKERCOOL® 3502 FF into the machines. The results showed:

  • Cleaner machined parts with improved quality
  • Sump life of 1 year reached
  • Elimination of Biocide or Fungicide additions
  • Chips were recycled back to the foundry after dripping, with less fluid remaining in the chip tank
  • Top up made at 2.5-3% which is a low % for cast iron machining
  • Target concentration was easier to maintain
  • No specific corrosion issue

As a result of the trials, the customer realized the following benefits:

  • 20% lower Total Cost
  • Improved cleanliness of the machines
